Indications
A kind of sugar called Osmolax is used to relieve constipation. It is referred to as a laxative because it draws water into your gut, making it simpler to pass your feces. Additionally, hepatic encephalopathy is treated using it (a liver disease causing confusion, tremor, decreased level of consciousness).
Pharmacology
A disaccharide called lactulose has been created. Saccharolytic bacteria break down lactulose in the colon, producing low molecular weight organic acids (mainly lactic acid), which lower the pH of the contents of the colon and increase peristaltic activity by promoting water retention through an osmotic action.
Dosage & Administration
In Constipation ( Chronic Constipation):
For reduction of Blood Ammonia level:
In damaged Intestinal Flora:
Interaction
There are no notable medication interactions with lactulose. A lack of potassium can intensify the cardiac glycosides' glycosidic action in cases of misuse.
Contraindications
Gastro-cardinal symptom complex, galactose intolerance, probable intestinal obstruction, and galactose-free diet.
Side Effect
At the beginning of treatment, flatulence, cramps, and abdominal discomfort are possible; this is rapidly treated by lowering the dose. Diarrhea can result from an overdose. One typical side effect of drug addiction is electrolyte loss (primarily potassium).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Lactulose is classified as a pregnancy category B by the US Food and Drug Administration. Lactulose has been shown in studies to have no negative effects. A registered physician must make decisions about use during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients who are intolerant to lactulose should be given the sugar with caution. The dose used in the treatment of (pre) coma hepatic is usually much higher, and diabetics should be aware of this.
Storage Conditions
Keep away from light and heat in a dry place. Keep out of children's reach.
