Common side effects include:
In case of lithium overdose:
Lithium's mechanism of action in treating bipolar disorder remains unclear despite over 50 years of clinical use. It is thought to work by inhibiting enzymes such as glycogen synthase kinase 3 and inositol phosphatases, or by modulating glutamate receptors. Lithium carbonate also affects the intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines and alters sodium transport in neurons and muscle cells.
Renal Impairment: For patients with CrCl between 10-50 mL/min, 50-75% of the normal dose should be administered.
Lithium therapy is contraindicated in:
Patients with excessive sweating or diarrhea may experience reduced lithium tolerance. Supplemental fluids and salt may be needed under medical supervision and lithium intake should be adjusted or temporarily discontinued until the condition stabilizes.
