Ibandronic Acid: A nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate that binds to bone hydroxyapatite, inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. This reduces bone turnover and increases bone mass, particularly in postmenopausal women.
Algae Calcium + Vitamin D3:
Calcium from natural algae contains calcium and 12 other bone-supporting minerals. It is absorbed in the GI tract, with the rest excreted in feces.
Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption and helps maintain calcium balance in the body.
Biocal Kit is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, especially in postmenopausal women to strengthen bones and reduce fracture risk.
Each kit contains:
Ibandronic Acid Tablet: Equivalent to 150 mg Ibandronic Acid (as Ibandronate Sodium Monohydrate Ph. Eur.).
Calcium (Algae Source) + Vitamin D3 Tablet: Provides 600 mg elemental Calcium (as Calcium Carbonate from algae source) and 400 IU Vitamin D3 (Colecalciferol).
Ibandronic Acid 150 mg + Algae Calcium 600 mg + Vitamin D3 400 IU
Common: Back pain, headache, GI disturbances (dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal discomfort), myalgia, and limb pain.
Day 1–10: Take one Calcium + Vitamin D3 tablet daily after meals.
Day 11: Take one Ibandronic Acid tablet with a full glass of plain water on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before breakfast. The patient must remain upright (sitting or standing) and avoid food or drinks (except water) for 1 hour.
Day 12–30: Continue with one Calcium + Vitamin D3 tablet daily after meals.
⚠️ Safety and effectiveness in children and adolescents have not been established.
Ibandronic Acid: May cause hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and GI symptoms. Treat with milk or antacids to bind drug.
Calcium + Vitamin D3: Overdose may lead to nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, constipation, weakness, or kidney issues. Treatment includes discontinuation and rehydration.
Ibandronic Acid: Absorption may be reduced by calcium, iron, magnesium, or aluminium. Caution with aspirin and NSAIDs due to GI irritation risk.
Calcium + Vitamin D3: May interact with digoxin, antacids, other calcium supplements, calcitriol, tetracyclines, thiazide diuretics, phenytoin, barbiturates, and corticosteroids. Certain foods (milk, cereals, spinach) may also reduce calcium absorption.
Ibandronic Acid: Esophageal abnormalities (e.g., stricture, achalasia), inability to sit/stand upright for 60 minutes, hypocalcemia.
Calcium + Vitamin D3: Hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, severe renal impairment, digoxin therapy, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
The kit is not intended for use in women of reproductive age.
Ibandronic Acid: Use cautiously in patients with GI disorders (e.g., Barrett’s esophagus, ulcers). Treat hypocalcemia before initiation. Discontinue if severe musculoskeletal pain, osteonecrosis of the jaw, or atypical femoral fractures occur. Avoid use in severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 ml/min).
Calcium + Vitamin D3: Monitor plasma and urinary calcium in patients with renal impairment or hypercalciuria. Use cautiously in kidney stones, sarcoidosis, and heart disease. Ensure adequate hydration in patients with a history of renal calculi. Separate calcium and iron doses by several hours.
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place.
Protect from light and moisture.
Keep out of children’s reach.
