It works by blocking certain hormones in the body as well as decreasing the bleeding from food pipe by narrowing the blood vessels. Stilamin is given by a healthcare professional. You should not self-administer this medicine at home. Your doctor will decide the dose and how often you should take them. You should use it regularly to get the most benefit from the medicine. Do not stop using the medicine even if you feel better unless the doctor tells you so. Using this medicine may cause few common side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, flatulence, and headache. Let your doctor know if any of these side effects do not go away or get worse. Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you have problems with your liver. How Stilamin works
Stilamin works by blocking the effects of certain natural hormones in the body such as serotonin and growth hormone. It also decreases bleeding from food pipe by constricting (narrowing) the blood vessels.
What if you forget to take Stilamin?
If you miss a dose of Stilamin, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Adult Dose
Intravenous Gastrointestinal haemorrhage Adult: Initially, 250 mcg as a bolus inj over 3-5 min, followed by a continuous infusion of 3.5 mcg/kg/hr until bleeding has ceased. May continue for a further 48-72 hr to prevent recurrent bleeding.
Mode of Action
Somatostatin is a polypetide obtained synthetically or from the hypothalamus. It acts by inhibiting the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary. It also inhibits the release of thyrotrophin and corticotropin from the pituitary, glucagon and insulin from the pancreas. It also regulates duodenal and gastric secretions. It may also play a role in pain perception.
Precaution
Monitor blood glucose levels. May inhibit intestinal absorption thus concomitant parenteral nutrition may be recommended.
Side Effect
Rapid infusion may lead to abdominal discomfort, nausea, flushing, bradycardia.
Interaction
Lengthens the time of hexobarbital-induced sleep & potentiates the action of pentetrazol.
