Folic acid: Required for nucleoprotein synthesis and normal erythropoiesis; dihydrofolate reductase converts folic acid in the liver and plasma to its metabolically active form, tetrahydrofolic acid; prevents neural tube defects in women of childbearing potential; higher doses required during pregnancy.
Folic acid is well tolerated by the majority of people. It's possible that you'll experience gastrointestinal issues. Only a few cases of hypersensitivity reactions have been observed.
Due to its biochemical inactivity, dihydrofolate reductase transforms folic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate (DHFR). These folic acid congeners are transported by endocytosis throughout cells, where they are necessary for maintaining healthy erythropoiesis, producing purine and thymidylate nucleic acids, converting amino acids, methylating tRNA, and producing and using formate. By remethylating homocysteine to methionine via methionine synthetase, which uses vitamin B12 as a cofactor, folic acid can reduce high homocysteine levels.
Adults-
