Yohimbine, the active compound in yohimbe, acts as a pre-synaptic alpha-2-adrenergic blocking agent. This property allows it to boost sympathetic nervous system activity, leading to increased levels of epinephrine (commonly known as adrenaline) and norepinephrine in the bloodstream.
Common side effects include rash, nausea, insomnia, tachycardia, tremor, mania, and vomiting, often accompanied by anxiety.
Yohimbine is prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, and fatigue.
Yohimbe acts as a potent alpha-2 adrenoceptor blocker and a weak alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist while also exhibiting some antidopaminergic properties. It interacts with adrenoceptors specifically stimulated by clonidine, alpha-methyl norepinephrine, tramazoline, guanabenz, and guanfacine. Yohimbe also interacts with compounds nonselectively activated by norepinephrine and epinephrine. It has a modest beneficial effect on the management of erectile dysfunction. Due to its alpha-2 adrenergic blockade, the drug is effective in addressing sexual disorders like reduced libido and diminished sexual response caused by specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Take 1 capsule three times daily or as directed by the physician.
Yohimbe may potentially counteract the hypotensive effects of antihypertensive drugs, leading to inadequate blood pressure control. It can enhance the potency of MAO inhibitors.
Patients with liver or kidney disease, chronic inflammation of the genital organs or prostate gland, or a history of stomach or duodenal ulcers should avoid taking this medication.
Yohimbe is likely unsafe. Yohimbe might affect the uterus and put pregnancy in danger. It might also poison the unborn child. Don't take Yohimbe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Patients using Yohimbe should abstain from alcohol.
