Pharmacology
The physiologically active component is Silymarin, a flavonoid compound derived from Silybum marianum, often known as Milk thistle. It protects the hepatocellular membrane from toxins, increases protein synthesis, antioxidant activity, anti-fibrotic activity, and may have anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects.
Dosage & Administration
1 capsule 2 to 3 times daily or as directed by a physician.
Interaction
The combination of silymarin with butyrophenones or phenothiazines has been shown to reduce lipid peroxidation.
Contraindications
In patients who have a known allergy to silymarin, this medication is contraindicated.
Side Effects
In the indicated dose, it is well tolerated. A modest laxative effect may be observed on rare occasions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is no data on the usage of Silymarin 70 mg or 140 mg during pregnancy or breastfeeding. As a result, if needed, Silymarin 70 mg or 140 mg should be taken with caution and in accordance with the doctor's instructions.
