Pheniramine is an antihistamine and anticholinergic that is used to treat hay fever. It works by inhibiting the action of histamine. To do so the drug molecules bind with histamine H1 receptor proteins present in effector cells.
Avil is a competitive H1 histamine receptor antagonist. Like other alkylamine antihistamines, it also antagonizes muscarinic cholinergic receptors and has local anesthetic properties, although these effects are not achieved at therapeutic doses.
Pheniramine, the active ingredient in Avil, competes with histamine for the H1 receptor, acting as an inverse agonist. This reduces itching, vasodilation, and capillary leakage, leading to less redness and edema. In the CNS, inverse agonism of the H1 receptor is responsible for sedation, a common effect of first-generation antihistamines like pheniramine.
