Desloratadine, the principal active metabolite of Loratadine, is a non-sedating, long-acting tricyclic histamine antagonist with selective H1-receptor histamine antagonist activity. It also inhibits histamine release from human mast cells.
There have been no clinically relevant drug interactions reported. Desloratadine is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to this medication or any of its ingredients or Loratadine.
Desloratadine is classified as Pregnancy Category C, and its safe use during pregnancy has not been established. It passes into breast milk, so a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or the medication, considering its importance to the mother.
It belongs to the therapeutic class of non-sedating antihistamines and should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from light, and below 30°C, keeping it out of the reach of children.
