Indications
The following conditions are treated with ketotifen:
Pharmacology
Similar to sodium chromoglycate, ketotifen has been used in the prevention of asthma because it has anti-allergic properties. It also has antihistamine properties. Ketotifen is effective at preventing asthma attacks and has potent anti-anaphylactic properties. Ketotifen's effects on histamine responses are distinct from its anti-anaphylactic ones and last for a long time. Experimental studies have shown that ketotifen is equally effective when taken orally as an inhaled selective mast cell stabilizer in asthmatic patients. In those tests, antihistamines came up empty. Long-term clinical studies have been conducted to gauge ketotifen's effectiveness. The frequency, severity, and duration of asthma attacks decreased, and in some patients, they disappeared entirely. A gradual reduction in corticosteroids and/or bronchodilators is also possible. The full establishment of ketotifen's prophylactic action could take several weeks. Existing asthma attacks will not stop while taking ketotifen.
Dosage & Administration
Interaction
Sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols may be enhanced by ketotifen. A reversible decrease in platelet count has been seen in a few individuals using Tifen concurrently with oral antidiabetic medications, leading to the suggestion that this combination be avoided.
Contraindications
A reversible decrease in platelet count has been reported in a few individuals using Ketotifen in conjunction with an oral anti-diabetic medication, and it has been advised that this combination be avoided. Although there is no indication of teratogenicity, Ketotifen should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Side Effects
Drowsiness, dry mouth, and minor dizziness may occur at the start of therapy but generally go away on their own within a few days.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Despite the lack of evidence of teratogenicity, Ketotifen should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
It is crucial to continue taking the previous medication for at least two weeks after starting Ketotifen in order to prevent asthma flare-ups. This is especially true for systemic corticosteroids and ACTH because steroid-dependent patients may experience adrenocortical insufficiency. Ketotifen medication needs to be supplemented with specialized antibiotic therapy if a concurrent infection develops. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate machinery until the effects of Ketotifen treatment have been fully understood because reactions could be impaired on the first day of treatment. Patients should be urged to refrain from drinking alcohol. Ketotifen may enhance the effects of hypnotics, antihistamines, sedatives, and alcohol.
Storage Conditions
Keep cool and dry, and keep away from direct sunlight. Keep out of children's reach.
