How does Prosfin 5 work?

Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), resulting in decreased serum levels of DHT.

Side Effects of Prosfin 5

Prosfin is generally well tolerated. In clinical studies, the following adverse experiences were reported in 1% of patients treated for 12 months:

• Impotence (3.7%)
• Decreased libido (3.3%)
• Decreased volume of ejaculate (2.8%)

Pharmacology

Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor of the 5α reductase enzyme, specifically targeting the type 2 isoform. It does not bind to androgen receptors. Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) within the prostate, thereby reducing the development and symptoms of BPH. It belongs to a new class of specific 5α reductase inhibitors and does not affect androgen receptors directly.

• The recommended dosage is one 5 mg tablet daily.
• Early improvement may be seen, but treatment for at least six months is necessary to assess effectiveness.
• Continue treatment thereafter as needed.
• Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it whole. Do not chew, crush, or break it. Prosfin may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

• Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustments are necessary.
• Hepatic Insufficiency: No available data.
• Elderly: No dosage adjustment is required.

Interaction

• No clinically important drug interactions have been identified.

Contraindications

Exposure Risks:

Precautions & Warnings

• Monitor patients with large residual urine volume and/or severely diminished urinary flow for obstructive uropathy.
• Prostate Cancer: Perform digital rectal examinations and other evaluations for prostate cancer before and during treatment. Prosfin lowers serum PSA levels, which can mask the presence of prostate cancer.
