✔️ How does Modipran 20mg Capsule

Modipran 20mg Capsule works by increasing the levels of a chemical substance in the brain called serotonin. This helps in reducing the symptoms by maintaining normal brain function. Thus, it helps to improve your mood and a feeling of well-being.

✔️ Side Effects of Modipran 20mg Capsule

• Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, dry mouth, and diarrhea.
• Neurological: Anxiety, nervousness, insomnia/drowsiness, and fatigue.
• Others: Excessive sweating, pruritus, and skin rashes associated with organ involvement.

• Take Fluoxetine in the morning since it can keep you awake if taken late at night.
• It may cause anxiety and agitation when you first start taking it.

✔️ Indications:

Modipran 20mg Capsule is an antidepressant medication used to treat depression, anxiety, panic disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. 

✔️ Pharmacology

Fluoxetine Hydrochloride is a phenylpropanolamine derivative antidepressant. It selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) at the presynaptic neuronal membrane, leading to increased synaptic concentration of serotonin in the CNS. This enhances serotonergic neurotransmission, resulting in functional changes associated with improved mood. It does not significantly affect the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine.

✔️ Dosage & Administration:

• Initial treatment: 20 mg/day in the morning. Consider a dose increase after several weeks if no improvement. Dosage above 20 mg/day should be administered bid and not exceed 80 mg/day.
• Maintenance treatment: Sustained therapy for several months is generally required for acute depression. The recommended maximum dose for elderly patients is 60 mg/day.

✔️ Overdose Effects

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, seizure, CV dysfunction, and altered CNS status. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment.

✔️ Interaction

• May lead to serotonin syndrome with serotonergic drugs.
• May increase bleeding risk with aspirin, NSAIDs, warfarin, and other anticoagulants.
• May increase plasma levels of phenytoin.
• Contraindicated with MAOIs or within 14 days of MAOIs withdrawal.
• May increase the QTc prolonging effect of pimozide and thioridazine.

✔️ Contraindications

Fluoxetine Hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to it and with concomitant use of MAOIs.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Use only if needed.
• Lactation: Caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Caution in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function.
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or a history of such disorders.
• Caution in diabetic subjects due to altered glycaemic control.
• Supervise depressed patients with suicidal tendencies closely.
• The use of Fluoxetine in children is not recommended as safety and efficacy have not been established.
