How does Sertal 50mg Tablet work?

It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain. This improves mood and physical symptoms of depression and also relieves symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and anxiety.

Side Effects of Sertal 50

Upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, dry mouth, loss of appetite, weight changes, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, pain, burning or tingling in hands or feet, excitement, sore throat.

Pharmacology

Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that enhances the availability of serotonin in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into neurons. This leads to increased serotonin activity at synaptic clefts, which helps alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. Its prolonged half-life allows for once-daily dosing.

Dosage & Administration of Sertal 50mg Tablet

Adults:

• Major Depressive Disorder: Start with 50 mg daily. The therapeutic range is 50-200 mg daily.
• Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Start with 50 mg daily. The therapeutic range is 50-200 mg daily.
• Panic Disorder, PTSD, SAD: Start with 25 mg daily, increasing to 50 mg after one week. The therapeutic range is 50-200 mg daily.

Pediatric Patients (ages 6-12 years):

• Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Start with 25 mg daily, increasing to 50 mg after one week. The therapeutic range is 50-200 mg daily.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD):

• Continuous Dosing: Start with 50 mg daily. Dosage can be increased in 50 mg increments per menstrual cycle up to 150 mg per day.
• Intermittent Dosing: Start with 50 mg daily, beginning 14 days before anticipated menstruation, and continue through the onset of menses. The dosage can be increased to a maximum of 100 mg per day during the next menstrual cycle.

Interaction

• Protein Binding: Sertal is highly protein-bound and may displace or be displaced by other protein-bound drugs (e.g., warfarin, digitoxin), potentially leading to adverse effects.
• Cimetidine, CNS active drugs (e.g., diazepam), hypoglycemic drugs, and atenolol: Potential for interaction; monitoring is recommended.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to sertraline or any excipients.
• Moderate to severe hepatic impairment.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Safety not established; animal studies did not show teratogenicity, but caution is advised.
• Lactation: Excreted in breast milk; effects on the nursing infant are unknown. Consider discontinuing breastfeeding if treatment is necessary.

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in patients with liver problems, kidney diseases, seizures, heart problems, and allergies.
• May cause dizziness or drowsiness; caution in activities requiring alertness (e.g., driving, using machinery).
