Racecadotril is classified as an antidiarrheal medication, utilized to alleviate symptoms of acute (short-term) diarrhea in adults and infants aged over 3 months. It serves as a supplementary treatment option when casual interventions for acute diarrhea prove insufficient. Acute diarrhea manifests as a sudden onset of 3 or more loose or watery stools per day, persisting for at least 14 days.
Containing 'Racecadotril' as its active component, the Receca 100mg Capsule functions as a prodrug that transforms into 'thiorphan,' an active form. Thiorphan acts upon the epithelial tissues of the small intestine, reducing intestinal hypersecretion (excessive loss) of electrolytes and water induced by cholera toxin or inflammation. Consequently, Racecadotril exerts swift antidiarrheal effects without altering the duration of intestinal transit, known as bowel transit time or the time food takes to traverse the digestive tract.
Adhere to the prescribed dosage and regimen of Racecadotril as directed by your physician. It's recommended to continue Racecadotril for the duration prescribed by your doctor, depending on your medical condition. While common side effects such as headache, rash, and skin redness may occur, most of these typically resolve gradually without necessitating medical intervention. However, if these side effects persist, consult your doctor for guidance.
Inform your doctor if you experience symptoms such as fever, blood or pus in stools, chronic diarrhea, diarrhea resulting from antibiotic usage, kidney or liver issues, or persistent or uncontrollable vomiting. If your condition fails to improve even after 7 days of Racecadotril usage, seek medical advice. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor before using Racecadotril. It's crucial to refrain from administering Racecadotril to children under three months of age. Avoid consuming alcohol concurrently with Racecadotril. Maintain open communication with your doctor regarding your health status and medication intake to mitigate any potential side effects.

Diarrhoea
It reduces the secretion of water and electrolytes from the intestine. This helps to reduce the amount of fluid loss from the body in diarrhea.
Possible side effects may include headache, erythema multiforme, urticaria, and angioedema.
Indications Receca is prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea.
Receca contains a potent intestinal antisecretory agent. It works by reducing the excessive secretion of water and electrolytes in the intestines triggered by cholera toxin or inflammation, without affecting basal secretory activity.
Upon oral intake, Receca is quickly absorbed and metabolized into thiorphan, an enkephalinase inhibitor. Enkephalinase is a peptidase found in various tissues, including the small intestine epithelium. By inhibiting this enzyme, Receca protects enkephalins from degradation, extending their action at enkephalinergic synapses in the small intestine, and decreasing hypersecretion. This action leads to rapid relief from diarrhea without altering intestinal transit duration.
Pharmacology Racecadotril works by inhibiting membrane-bound enkephalinase, thereby increasing the availability of endogenous opioids (enkephalins). Enkephalins, in turn, activate δ opioid receptors, promoting selective chloride absorption by inhibiting adenylate cyclase.
Enkephalinase inhibition occurs within 30 minutes after administration.
For Adults: Initially, take one capsule irrespective of the time of day, followed by one capsule three times daily before main meals.
For Children (from 3 months of age): Racecadotril granules should be administered with oral rehydration. The recommended dosage is based on body weight:
No interactions have been observed with other drugs. Concurrent use of Receca with Loperamide or Nifuroxazide does not affect Receca's kinetics.
Receca should not be used in individuals with hypersensitivity to Racecadotril or any of its components.
Due to limited clinical data, Receca is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Receca does not alter standard rehydration regimens. Bloody stools and fever may indicate invasive bacteria or other severe conditions, warranting caution. It has not been tested for antibiotic-associated diarrhea and should not be used under these circumstances. Use caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
