How does Fungistin work?

Nystatin, the active ingredient, binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, affecting permeability and leading to leakage of cellular contents, ultimately killing the fungus.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (occasionally reported with high doses); no systemic effects or allergic reactions associated with oral doses.

Pharmacology

Nystatin, the active component of Fungistin, exhibits fungistatic or fungicidal activity against various pathogenic and non-pathogenic yeasts and fungi, including Candida albicans. It binds to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, disrupting its integrity and leading to the loss of cellular constituents. Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Dosage & Administrations of Fungistin

• Adults:
  • Intestinal or Esophageal Candidiasis: 500,000 units (5 ml) orally 3-4 times daily; dosage may be doubled if necessary.
  • Prophylaxis in Adults: 1,000,000 units (10 ml) daily to suppress Candida overgrowth during broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy.
  • Dental Sores and Oral Infection: 100,000 units (1 ml) four times daily.
• Children:
  • Oral/Intestinal Candidiasis: 100,000 units (1 ml) four times daily. Prolonged contact with the affected area in the mouth enhances efficacy.
  • Prophylaxis in Newborns: 100,000 units (1 ml) once daily or as prescribed.
• Elderly: 500,000 units (5 ml) four times daily for those unable to swallow tablets.

Oral: For oral candidiasis, administer 100,000-600,000 units into the mouth four times daily. Dosage may vary based on age and severity.

Topical: Apply the ointment externally to the affected area once or twice daily, as prescribed by the doctor.
