Indications of Geston
Geston is used in the following situations:
Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) is a condition in which a woman's growth is (IUGR)
Pharmacology
Synthetic progesterone derivative allylestrenol is used to treat threatening pregnancies. It can help women avoid preterm labor and give birth to a healthy infant. It promotes the secretory phase in the myometrium, allowing the fertilized ovum to develop. It has a tocolytic action, which means it lowers myometrium oxytocin sensitivity. It promotes the formation of mammary gland acinus, trophoblast secretory activity, and adrenal gland aldosterone production. Allylestrenol has a variety of β-adrenergic effects as well. As a result, it increases the release of placental hormones by stimulating the synthesis of placental progesterone in the body.
Dosage & Administration of Geston
Intra Uterine Growth Retardation: 1 tablet three times a day at least two months. Dose to be reduced if symptoms improve.
Threatened abortion: 1 tablet three times daily until symptoms disappear.
Habitual abortion: 1-2 tablets daily as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed. The administration should be continued for at least one month after the end of the critical period.
Threatened premature delivery: Dosage must be determined individually. High dosages (up to 40 mg daily) have been used.
In case of a missed dose, it should be taken as soon as the patient remembers & she should continue the regular dosing schedule. A double dose is not recommended.
Interaction of Geston
Allylestrenol was developed to prevent miscarriage and preterm labor in women, and it is now being researched for usage in males to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Contraindications of Geston
Hypersensitivity; thrombophlebitis; undetected vaginal hemorrhage, incomplete miscarriage, hormone-dependent cancer, cerebral apoplexy, and as a pregnancy diagnostic test; severe hepatic impairment.
Side Effects of Geston
Allylestrenol therapy (particularly long-term treatment) has been linked to gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain.
