Huntington's disease is indeed an inherited condition characterized by the degeneration of nerve cells in certain parts of the brain. This degeneration leads to various physical, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms. One of the hallmark symptoms of Huntington's disease is chorea, which refers to abnormal, jerky, or involuntary movements.
Tetrabenazine is a medication commonly used in the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease. It works by reducing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which are involved in controlling movement. By depleting these neurotransmitters, Tetrabenazine helps to alleviate chorea and improve motor control in individuals with Huntington's disease.
