How does Ancor 5mg Tablet work?

Bisoprolol is a beta blocker that works specifically on the heart. It works by slowing down the heart rate and makes the heart more efficient at pumping blood around the body.

Side Effects of Ancor 5mg Tablet

Possible side effects include:

• Common: Fatigue, dizziness, headache, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain), cold or numb extremities, muscle weakness, or cramps.
• Serious: Bronchospasm (in asthmatics or COPD patients), slower than normal heart rate, breathing difficulties.

Indication of Ancor 5mg Tablet

Ancor is indicated for:

• Hypertension
• Angina
• Moderate to Severe Heart Failure

Pharmacology

Bisoprolol Fumarate is a highly selective β1-blocker with minimal effects on β2 receptors. It works by selectively blocking β1-adrenergic receptors in the heart and vascular smooth muscle, reducing heart rate and cardiac output, thus lowering arterial hypertension. Unlike non-β1 selective blockers, Bisoprolol does not adversely affect lipid metabolism or reduce cardioprotective HDL-cholesterol in long-term therapy.

• Absorption and Bioavailability: Bisoprolol is over 90% absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract with an absolute bioavailability of 88%. Food does not affect its absorption.

Dosage & Administration of Ancor 5mg Tablet

Adults:

• Initial Dose: 5 mg once daily, can be added to a diuretic or used alone.
• Titration: If 5 mg is inadequate, increase to 10 mg, and if necessary, to 20 mg once daily. Dosage increases should occur at 2-week intervals.
• Max Dose: Generally, doses beyond 20 mg once daily provide minimal additional benefit.

Children: Safety and effectiveness have not been established.

Renal or Hepatic Impairment:

• Initial Dose: 5 mg daily. Use caution in dose titration due to possible drug accumulation.
• Dialysis: Bisoprolol is not dialyzable; thus, drug replacement is not required.

Interaction

• Lactation: Small amounts detected in animal milk; unknown if excreted in human milk. If necessary, mothers should stop nursing.

Precautions & Warnings

• Renal or Hepatic Impairment: Adjust doses cautiously.
