Losartan Potassium is the first non-peptide, orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It selectively binds to the AT₁ receptor located in various tissues such as vascular smooth muscle, adrenal glands, kidneys, and heart, thereby blocking the effects of angiotensin II.
This action leads to vasodilation, reduced aldosterone secretion, and ultimately lower blood pressure, providing effective control of hypertension and renal protection.
Pregnancy Category D: Losartan can cause fetal renal impairment and increase the risk of fetal and neonatal morbidity or death if used during the second or third trimester.
It is unknown whether Losartan is excreted in human milk; due to potential adverse effects on the nursing infant, the drug should be avoided during breastfeeding or discontinued if necessary.
Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
