Introduction Nidipine SR is a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and prevent angina (heart-related chest pain). It belongs to the calcium channel blocker class of medicines. It lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's workload, helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Nidipine SR may be prescribed alone or in combination with other medications. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and frequency based on your condition and response to treatment. You can take it with or without food, but it is best to take it at the same time each day. Avoid leaving the medicine out of the packet for too long as it is light-sensitive and may not work properly. Continue taking it as advised by your doctor, even if you feel well. Regular exercise, weight reduction, and a healthy diet can also help control your blood pressure. Follow your doctor's advice while taking this medication.
Exercise caution when consuming alcohol while taking Nidipine SR. Consult your doctor for guidance.
Nidipine SR may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown potential risks to the developing baby, though human studies are limited. Your doctor will assess the benefits and risks before prescribing it. Please consult your doctor.
Nidipine SR is likely safe during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggest that the medication does not pose significant risks to the baby.
Nidipine SR may cause dizziness or weakness due to low blood pressure. Do not drive if you experience these symptoms. The medication may make you feel dizzy, faint, extremely tired, or have visual disturbances, affecting your ability to drive.
Nidipine SR is safe for patients with kidney disease, and no dose adjustment is required. However, discuss with your doctor if you have any underlying kidney conditions.
Use Nidipine SR with caution if you have liver disease. Dose adjustments may be necessary. Consult your doctor.
Common side effects include peripheral edema, dizziness, flushing, headache, heartburn, nausea, muscle cramps, mood changes, nervousness, cough, dyspnea, palpitations, wheezing, transient hypotension, urticaria, pruritus, constipation, and chest pain. Gingival hyperplasia, agranulocytosis, and erectile dysfunction have also been reported.
Nifedipine blocks calcium ions from entering cardiac and smooth muscle cells during depolarization, causing peripheral and coronary vasodilation. This reduces afterload, peripheral resistance, and blood pressure, increases coronary blood flow, and may cause reflex tachycardia. It has minimal effect on cardiac conduction and rarely has negative inotropic effects.
Adult Dose
Use caution in patients with hypotension, poor cardiac reserve, heart failure, severe aortic stenosis, diabetes mellitus, and severe gastrointestinal narrowing (for extended-release tablets). Avoid abrupt withdrawal as it may cause rebound angina. Monitor liver function in patients with hepatic impairment. Discontinue if ischemic pain follows administration. Monitor blood pressure and heart rate. During lactation, consult your doctor as the drug is distributed into breast milk. The American Academy of Pediatrics states the drug is safe for nursing.
Store in a cool and dry place, and protect from light. Do not use the drug after the expiry date. Keep out of reach of children.
