How does Valsartil 160/12.5mg Tablet work?

• Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking the hormone angiotensin thereby relaxing blood vessels. This allows the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.
• Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that removes extra water and certain electrolytes from the body. Over time it also relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow.

Side Effects of Valsartil 160/12.5mg Tablet

• Common: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, nausea.
• Others: Hyperkalemia, reduced renal function, allergic reactions, dyspnea, constipation, back pain, muscle cramps, rash, anxiety, insomnia, vertigo, hypotension.

• It can be taken with or without food.
• Valsartil 160/12.5 may cause dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids and inform your doctor if you develop extreme thirst, very dry mouth, or muscle weakness.
• It may cause dizziness. Get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
• Use of Valsartil 160/12.5 during pregnancy or breastfeeding is unsafe.
• It may also decrease the risk of stroke and heart attacks.

Indication of Valsartil 160/12.5mg Tablet

• Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

Pharmacology

• Valsartan: An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that prevents angiotensin II from binding to its receptors, causing blood vessels to relax and lower blood pressure.
  • Mechanism: Blocks angiotensin II AT1 receptors, leading to vasodilation.
  • Selectivity: 20,000 times more affinity for AT1 receptors than AT2 receptors.
• Hydrochlorothiazide: A thiazide diuretic that increases the excretion of sodium and chloride, reducing plasma volume and consequently lowering blood pressure.
  • Mechanism: Increases renal excretion of sodium and chloride, leading to decreased plasma volume and lower blood pressure.
  • Effects: Increases plasma renin, aldosterone secretion, and urinary potassium loss, which can be counteracted by ARBs.

Dosage & Administration of Valsartil 160/12.5mg Tablet

• For Hypertension: Patients not controlled with monotherapy should switch to Valsartil Plus once daily.
  • Max Dose: Valsartan 320 mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg.
• Elderly: No dosage adjustment is needed.
• Pediatric Use: Not established.
• Renal Impairment: Use regular regimens if creatinine clearance is>30 ml/min; use loop diuretics if clearance is lower.
• Hepatic Impairment: Use caution and monitor closely.

Interaction

Valsartan:

• Diuretics: These may cause excessive blood pressure reduction.
• Potassium Supplements: Can lead to hyperkalemia.
• Lithium Salts: Monitor serum lithium levels closely.
• Others: Warfarin, Digoxin.

Hydrochlorothiazide:

• Alcohol/Barbiturates/Narcotics: May enhance antihypertensive effects.
• Antidiabetics: Dosage adjustments may be needed.
• Other Antihypertensives: Additive effects.
• Cholestyramine/Colestipol: Impairs absorption.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the product.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Should not be used, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.
• Nursing Mothers: Valsartan's excretion in human milk is unknown; Hydrochlorothiazide is excreted in breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

• Hepatic Function: Use caution in patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
• Renal Function: Monitor renal function and adjust dosage as necessary.
