Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), blocking the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan formation. This disruption weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Common:
Nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea
Less Common/Serious:
Dizziness, flatulence, headache, rash, pruritus
Elevated liver enzymes, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia
Vaginitis, fever, erythema multiforme, Stevens–Johnson syndrome
Potentially fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis

Renal Impairment:
Probenecid: May increase plasma concentrations of cefixime.
Anticoagulants: May prolong prothrombin time, increasing bleeding risk.
May be taken with or without food; taking with food or milk helps reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
Pregnancy: Available data do not indicate a major risk of birth defects or miscarriage.
Lactation: Unknown if excreted in human milk, but likely present; use with caution considering the benefits of breastfeeding and the mother’s clinical need.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment, gastrointestinal disease, or a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins.
Safety in pregnancy and lactation is not fully established.
Discontinue if allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulty occur.
Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
