Genacyn is an antibiotic ointment used for treating minor skin infections like folliculitis and infected cuts. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, thus helping to alleviate symptoms and heal the underlying infection. Here are some important points to remember about Genacyn:
Gentamicin Sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, thereby exerting bactericidal effects.
Apply the ointment three times daily after cleaning the affected area with soap and water and ensuring it is thoroughly dried. If crusts are present, they should be removed before application to maximize contact with the infecting organisms.
Gentamicin infusion and treatment are contraindicated in patients with extreme sensitivity to Gentamicin. Contraindicated in pregnancy and myasthenia gravis.
Classified as Pregnancy Category D. Gentamicin may be present in breast milk, so breastfeeding should be avoided during treatment.
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and keep out of children's reach.
