How does Lomeflox 400mg Tablet work?

Lomefloxacin is an antibiotic. It works by stopping the action of a bacterial enzyme called DNA-gyrase. This prevents the bacterial cells from dividing and repairing, thereby killing them.

Indication of Lomeflox 400mg Tablet

A bacterial infection is a condition in which harmful bacteria enter, multiply, and infect the body. It can target any body part and multiply very quickly. Generalised symptoms of bacterial infection include fever, chills, and fatigue. Anyone can become infected with a bacterial infection. However, people with a weak immune system or taking immunosuppressive medicines are more prone to bacterial infection.

Pharmacology

Lomefloxacin is a difluorinated quinolone derivative that acts as a bacterial gyrase inhibitor, making it effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Its mechanism involves interference with bacterial DNA processes, including replication, transcription, and repair. Specifically, Lomefloxacin targets the A-subunit of the bacterial enzyme gyrase (topoisomerase II), forming a stable complex with the gyrase tetramer (A2B2). This complex impairs the enzyme's function, leading to the rapid death of susceptible bacteria.

Despite its effectiveness, Lomefloxacin has been noted for cross-resistance with other quinolones, but not with other classes of antibiotics. However, there are no clinical studies confirming its efficacy in treating infections caused by chlamydia.

Dosage & Administration of Lomeflox 400mg Tablet

Take Lomeflox 400mg Tablet with or without food. Swallow it as a whole with a full glass of water; do not crush or chew it.

Interaction

Inform your doctor if you are taking steroids (dexamethasone), anti-diabetic (glipizide), and NSAID (aspirin).

Inform the doctor if you have colitis, CNS disorders, myasthenia gravis (neuromuscular disease), peripheral neuropathy, tendonitis (inflammation of tendons), diabetes, crystalluria (presence of crystals in urine), or kidney problems.

Contraindications

Do not take Lomefloxacin if you are allergic to any of its components. 

Pregnancy & Lactation

Lomefloxacin passes through the placenta and is excreted into breast milk in animals, but there are no adequate human studies. It should only be used during pregnancy or lactation if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus or infant.

Precautions & Warnings

Individuals with hypersensitivity to Lomefloxacin, its excipients, or other quinolones should avoid using this medication. Long-term use may also lead to secondary fungal infections or the growth of non-susceptible bacteria.
