Description:

Minocin 100 contains Minocycline, which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage certain bacterial infections affecting the ears, eyes, throat, nose, and respiratory system (chest infections), gonorrhea, pelvic infections, skin infections (such as acne), urinary tract infections, and prostate infections. It is also used to manage meningitis carriers and infections before and after operations.

Minocin 100 should be used with caution in adults and adolescents but is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12 years.

Indication of Minocin 100

Minocin is indicated for oral administration to treat infections caused by tetracycline-sensitive organisms and some tetracycline-resistant strains of staphylococci. Conditions treated include:

Pharmacology

Minocycline inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 30S and possibly 50S ribosomal subunits of susceptible bacteria.

Dosage & Administration of Minocin 100
  • Routine antibiotic use: 200 mg daily in divided doses.
  • Acne: 50 mg twice daily for at least 6 weeks.
  • Gonorrhea:
    • Males: 200 mg initially, followed by 100 mg every 12 hours for at least 4 days. Post-therapy cultures should be taken within 2-3 days.
    • Females: May require longer therapy.
  • Prophylaxis of asymptomatic meningococcal carriers: 100 mg twice daily for 5 days, followed by treatment with rifampicin.

If there is no satisfactory response after six months, minocycline should be discontinued. For treatments exceeding six months, monitor patients every three months for signs of hepatitis or SLE.

  • Renal impairment: Use with caution in severe cases.
  • Children: Not recommended under 12 years. For those over 12, administer 50 mg every 12 hours.

Take the medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole without chewing, crushing, or breaking it. Minocin 100 may be taken with or without food, preferably at a fixed time daily.

Interaction
  • Anticoagulants: Tetracyclines depress plasma prothrombin activity. Reduced doses of anticoagulants may be necessary.
  • ACE inhibitors, antacids, and adsorbents: Tetracyclines bind to di-/tri-valent cations, impairing absorption. Maximize dosage separation.
  • Diuretics: May aggravate nephrotoxicity.
  • Antibacterials: Do not use Minocin with penicillins.
  • Ergotamine and ergometrine: Increased risk of ergotism.
  • Oral contraceptives: Both can induce hyperpigmentation.
  • Retinoids: Avoid isotretinoin shortly before, during, and after minocycline therapy.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Minocycline is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
