How does Minocin 100 work?

Minocin 100 is an antibiotic that stops bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Side Effects of Minocin 100

Reported side effects include:

• Oral and anogenital candidiasis, vulvovaginitis, eosinophilia, leucopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis
• Anaphylaxis, hypersensitivity, pulmonary infiltrates, anaphylactoid purpura, polyarthritis nodosa
• Abnormal thyroid function, brown-black discoloration of the thyroid

• Do not skip doses and complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
• It may cause dizziness; avoid driving or activities requiring mental alertness.
• Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop after completing the treatment. Consult your doctor if it persists or if you find blood in your stools.
• Discontinue Minocin 100 and consult your doctor immediately if you develop a rash, itchy skin, swelling of the face and mouth, or difficulty breathing.
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Indication of Minocin 100

Minocin is indicated for oral administration to treat infections caused by tetracycline-sensitive organisms and some tetracycline-resistant strains of staphylococci. Conditions treated include:

• Acne
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Ophthalmological infections
• Acute and chronic bronchitis
• Bronchiectasis
• Lung abscess
• Ear, nose, and throat infections
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Nocardiosis
• Urinary tract infections
• Gonorrhea
• Non-gonococcal urethritis
• Prostatitis
• Prophylactic treatment of asymptomatic meningococcal carriers
• Pre- and post-operative infection prophylaxis

Pharmacology

Minocycline inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 30S and possibly 50S ribosomal subunits of susceptible bacteria.

Dosage & Administration of Minocin 100

• Routine antibiotic use: 200 mg daily in divided doses.
• Acne: 50 mg twice daily for at least 6 weeks.
• Gonorrhea:
  • Males: 200 mg initially, followed by 100 mg every 12 hours for at least 4 days. Post-therapy cultures should be taken within 2-3 days.
  • Females: May require longer therapy.
• Prophylaxis of asymptomatic meningococcal carriers: 100 mg twice daily for 5 days, followed by treatment with rifampicin.

If there is no satisfactory response after six months, minocycline should be discontinued. For treatments exceeding six months, monitor patients every three months for signs of hepatitis or SLE.

• Renal impairment: Use with caution in severe cases.
• Children: Not recommended under 12 years. For those over 12, administer 50 mg every 12 hours.

Take the medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole without chewing, crushing, or breaking it. Minocin 100 may be taken with or without food, preferably at a fixed time daily.

Interaction

• Anticoagulants: Tetracyclines depress plasma prothrombin activity. Reduced doses of anticoagulants may be necessary.
• ACE inhibitors, antacids, and adsorbents: Tetracyclines bind to di-/tri-valent cations, impairing absorption. Maximize dosage separation.
• Diuretics: May aggravate nephrotoxicity.
• Antibacterials: Do not use Minocin with penicillins.
• Ergotamine and ergometrine: Increased risk of ergotism.
• Oral contraceptives: Both can induce hyperpigmentation.
• Retinoids: Avoid isotretinoin shortly before, during, and after minocycline therapy.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
• Pregnancy and lactation
• Complete renal failure
• Children under 12 years

Pregnancy & Lactation

Minocycline is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation. It crosses the placenta and may have toxic effects on the developing fetus, including skeletal development retardation and permanent tooth discoloration. Tetracyclines are also found in breast milk and may cause permanent tooth discoloration in the infant.

Precautions & Warnings

• Breathing difficulties: Discontinue use and seek medical advice if symptoms develop.
• Pediatric population: Not recommended for children under 12 due to the risk of tooth discoloration and enamel hypoplasia.
• Hepatic impairment: Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction.
• Auto-immune disorders: Discontinue if signs of SLE or hepatotoxicity appear.
• Renal impairment: No significant drug accumulation in mild to moderate impairment. Adjust dosage in severe cases.
• Cross-sensitivities: Minocin may need to be discontinued if cross-resistance or cross-sensitivity develops.
• Intracranial hypertension: Discontinue if symptoms appear.
• Hyperpigmentation: This may occur at various body sites; discontinue if unusual pigmentation is reported.
• Photosensitivity: Avoid sunlight exposure and discontinue at the first sign of skin discomfort.
