Neomycin Sulfate + Bacitracin Zinc
This is for the treatment of bacterial infections on the skin. This works well for atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, infections, eczematoid dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema, and anogenital pruritus. It may also be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of some pyodermas, such as impetigo, during systemic antibiotic therapy.
Bacitracin inhibits the formation of bacterial cell walls and is effective against numerous gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (e.g. staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria, and Clostridia) (e.g. Neisseria and Haemophilus influenzae). They're frequently encountered in topical formulations as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents in combination.
Neomycin binds to the 30S subunits of the bacterial ribosome, limiting protein synthesis and hence affecting DNA synthesis. It has an antibacterial spectrum similar to gentamicin. It is effective against several gram-negative bacteria and some staphylococci strains.
Ointment: Before use, the area for application should be cleaned gently. Derbis such as pus or crusts should be removed from the affected area. Apply two to three times daily to the affected skin area.
Dusting Powder: Antibiotic powder is a non- sterile dusting powder and used for superficial skin infections. A light dusting of the powder to be applied to the affected skin area upto 4 times daily.
When used with other nephrotoxic medicines, bacitracin zinc increases the risk of nephrotoxicity. It's possible that it boosts the effects of neuromuscular blockers.
Other aminoglycosides, bacitracin, cisplatin, vancomycin, amphotericin B, polymyxin B, colistin, and viomycin have additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects with neomycin sulphate. Potent diuretics increase toxicity. Other medications' absorption may be hampered. Acarbose's impact may be enhanced. Non-depolarizing muscle relaxants may be enhanced by this compound. It's possible that it'll counteract the parasympathomimetic effects of neostigmine and pyridostigmine. In patients using bisphosphonates, it may raise the risk of hypocalcemia.
Any of its components can cause hypersensitivity.
This medicine is generally well tolerated. Allergic responses can develop in rare circumstances.
This preparation's safety during pregnancy and lactation has yet to be determined. As a result, it should only be used during pregnancy if the possible benefit outweighs the danger to the fetus.
Antibiotic powders containing Bacitracin and Neomycin should not be applied to big open wounds, seriously wounded skin, or places that discharge considerable amounts of fluid because hard crusts may form. Due to the danger of ototoxicity, this skin ointment should not be used to treat otitis externa when the eardrum is ruptured because it includes Neomycin.
Patients who are thinking about self-medicating with a topical anti-infective for deep or puncture wounds, animal attacks, or major burns should see a doctor first. Patients who are using topical anti-infective preparations to prevent infection in minor skin injuries (e.g., cuts, scrapes, and burns) should be advised to stop using it and consult a doctor if the condition persists or worsens; it should not be used for more than one week unless directed by a doctor.
