How does Pedilid 300 work?

Pedilid 300 is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Thus, it stops the bacteria from growing and prevents the infection from spreading.

Side Effects of Pedilid 300

• Common Side Effects: Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and hypersensitivity rash are reported by less than 4% of patients.
• Other Possible Side Effects: Vomiting, dizziness, headache, pruritus (itching), dyspepsia (indigestion), flatulence, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, and constipation. These are generally mild and do not require discontinuation of the medication.

Quick Suggestions:

• Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection come back and harder to treat.
• Take it 1 hour before or two hours after food.
• Do not take antacids 2 hours before or after taking Roxithromycin.
• Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools.
• Stop taking Roxithromycin and inform your doctor immediately if you develop an itchy rash, swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, or breathing difficulties while taking it.

Pedilid is indicated for the treatment of various infections, including:

• Respiratory Infections: Pneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchopneumonia.
• ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Infections: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media.
• Skin Infections: Folliculitis, furuncles, cellulitis, carbuncles, pyoderma, impetigo, infected dermatitis.
• Genital Infections: Urethritis, prostatitis, cervicitis, salpingitis, particularly those caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

Pharmacology:

Pedilid works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria. It binds irreversibly to the 50s ribosomal subunit of susceptible organisms, blocking essential protein synthesis and stunting bacterial cell growth.

Dosage & Administration of Pedilid 300

• Adult Dose:
  • The usual adult dosage is one 300 mg tablet once daily or one 150 mg tablet twice a day.
  • The treatment should continue for at least two days after symptoms resolve, typically lasting 5 to 10 days.
  • In cases of severe hepatic impairment, the dose should be reduced to 150 mg once daily.
• Pediatric Dose:
  • The dose for children is based on body weight: 2.5 to 5 mg/kg body weight, administered twice daily.
  • Guidelines:
    • 6 to 11 Kg: 25 mg Roxithromycin every 12 hours.
    • 12 to 23 Kg: 50 mg Roxithromycin every 12 hours.
    • 24 to 40 Kg: 100 mg Roxithromycin every 12 hours.
  • The treatment duration is typically 5 to 10 days.

Interaction

• Minimal Interactions: Pedilid does not significantly interact with the cytochrome P-450 enzyme system, making it less likely to produce significant drug interactions.
• Mild Interaction: A mild interaction with theophylline has been noted, but it is not clinically significant.
• No Significant Interactions: No major alterations in the pharmacokinetics of carbamazepine or warfarin. Antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, and food do not affect Pedilid absorption.

Contraindications

Roxithromycin should not be taken with ergotamine or its derivatives, as this combination can provoke arterial spasms and severe ischemia.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: The safety of Roxithromycin during pregnancy has not been firmly established.
• Lactation: Roxithromycin appears in breast milk in small amounts but does not typically produce adverse effects in the breastfed infant.

Precautions & Warnings

• Hypersensitivity: Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
• Hepatic Disease: In patients with liver conditions, the dose should not exceed 150 mg twice daily.
