It works by inhibiting reflexes at the spinal level and acts as a CNS depressant with antinociceptive effects.
Common side effects include drowsiness, daytime sedation, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea, constipation, and urinary frequency. More severe effects like hallucinations, depression, respiratory depression, hypotension, and seizures can occur.
Lioresal 10mg Tablet is used to manage muscle spasms caused due to cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke or due to any other nerve or spinal cord disorders.
Baclofen inhibits both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level by stimulating the GABAB receptors, which inhibit the release of glutamate and aspartate. It may also act at intraspinal sites producing CNS depression. Baclofen also exerts an antinociceptive effect.
For adults and children over 10 years, the starting dose is 5 mg three times daily with food, gradually increasing to a maximum of 100 mg daily.
For children under 10 years, the starting dose is 2.5 mg four times daily, with maintenance doses varying by age.
Lioresal may interact with CNS depressants, alcohol, synthetic opiates, antihypertensives, tricyclic antidepressants, levodopa, carbidopa, MAO inhibitors, magnesium sulfate, and neuromuscular blocking agents. Always consult your doctor about potential interactions.
Lioresal is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the product. It should be used cautiously in patients with renal impairment, psychiatric disorders, epilepsy, peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, and respiratory or hepatic failure.
Lioresal is a pregnancy category B3 drug. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Baclofen is excreted in breast milk, but the quantities are generally too small to affect the infant.
