How does Methomol 750mg Tablet work?

It works by stopping pain signals (nerve impulses) to the brain, thereby helping relieve muscle stiffness or muscle spasms associated with pain and injury. 

Side Effects of Methomol 750mg Tablet

• Common: Nausea, anorexia, fever, headache, blurred vision, lassitude, drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, anxiety, confusion, convulsions.
• Hypersensitivity Reactions: Rashes, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema.
• Parenteral Administration: Flushing, metallic taste, incoordination, diplopia, nystagmus, vertigo, sloughing, and thrombophlebitis at the injection site.
• Potentially Fatal: Syncope, hypotension, bradycardia, anaphylaxis (parenteral).

• Exercising regularly helps in muscle stretching so that they are less likely to spasm, tear, and sprain. Mild exercises such as jogging and walking are helpful for muscle stretching.
• Massages can also be helpful.
• It is better to avoid extremely cold and hot temperatures.
• Also avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes, instead, wear loose garments.
• Rest well and get plenty of sleep during treatment with METHOCARBAMOL.
• To avoid developing pressure sores, change your position at least every two hours.
• Hot or cold therapy can help treat muscle spasms. Apply an ice pack or hot pack on the muscle for 15-20 minutes.

Indication of Methomol 750mg Tablet

Methomol 750mg Tablet belongs to the group of medicines called 'muscle relaxants'. It is mainly used to relieve pain and muscle spasms occurring due to acute musculoskeletal problems. Muscle spasm is the painful and involuntary contraction that occurs when the nerve impulses that control the muscle movements are damaged or interrupted. Secondly, it also treats tetanus conditions (lockjaw) which are characterized by painful tightening of muscles. Tetanus is a nerve disorder leading to painful muscle contraction, mainly affecting the jaw and neck muscles. 

Pharmacology

Methocarbamol is a centrally-acting skeletal muscle relaxant with an unknown precise mode of action. It is believed to cause general depression of the central nervous system.

Dosage & Administration of Methomol 750mg Tablet

Adult Dose:

Oral (Muscle spasm):

• Initial: 1.5 g every 6 hours for 48-72 hours; not exceeding 8 g/day.
• Maintenance: Reduce to 4-4.5 g/day, divided every 4-8 hours.

Administration of Methomol 750mg Tablet

Always take Methomol 750mg Tablet as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine with plenty of water and do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight, and disease conditions.

Interaction

• Potentiated by alcohol and other CNS depressants.
• May inhibit the effect of pyridostigmine; use with caution with anticholinesterase agents.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to methocarbamol or any of its components.
• Renal impairment (for parenteral solutions).
• Epilepsy or history of epilepsy.
• Coma or pre-coma states, brain damage, myasthenia gravis.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category C. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Methocarbamol. It is also not known whether Methocarbamol can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Methocarbamol should be given to a pregnant woman only if needed. Methocarbamol and/or its metabolites are excreted in the milk of dogs; however, it is not known whether Methocarbamol or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Methocarbamol is administered to a nursing woman.

Precautions & Warnings

• May cause drowsiness/dizziness; avoid alcohol or other CNS depressants.
• May be taken with food to avoid stomach upset.
• Half-life increases with hepatic impairment.
• IV formulation is not recommended for renal impairment (contains polyethylene glycol); the injection rate should not exceed 3 mL/min.
• May interfere with screening tests for 5-HIAA and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA).
• Use injection with caution in patients with a history of seizures.
• Sedative effects may be potentiated when used with other sedatives.
• Poorly tolerated by the elderly.
• Pediatric IV dosing is approved only for tetanus.
• Lactation: Unknown if excreted in breast milk; use caution.
