Flavoxate relaxes the muscles in the urinary bladder and helps the bladder to retain a larger amount of urine.

• Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or carbonated drinks as they can worsen your symptoms.
• It may cause dizziness and blurring of vision. Don't drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how it affects you.
• Dry mouth may occur as a side effect. Chewing sugarless gum and drinking plenty of water may help.
• Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma (a disease associated with increased eye pressure).

Muscle spasms of the urinary tract

Flavoxate is employed to alleviate muscle spasms occurring in the urinary tract. It aids in mitigating urinary symptoms like a sudden urge to urinate, frequent and painful urination, inability to control urination, and urinary leakage, among others, which may arise due to different medical conditions.

Pharmacology

Flavoxate acts as a direct antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in cholinergically innervated organs. Its anticholinergic-parasympatholytic activity reduces smooth muscle tonus in the bladder, decreasing the frequency of voids, episodes of urge incontinence, and severity of urgency. It also improves retention and allows for greater volume per void.

Dosage & Administration

For adults and children over 12 years: Take one tablet (100 mg or 200 mg) three times a day. 

• The dose may be reduced with the improvement of symptoms.

Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in children under 12 years have not been established.

Contraindications

Flavoxate is not recommended for individuals with pyloric or duodenal obstruction, obstructive intestinal lesions or ileus, achalasia, gastrointestinal bleeding, or obstructive lower urinary tract uropathies.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Nursing Mothers: Exercise caution as it is not known whether flavoxate is excreted in human milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Use flavoxate cautiously in patients with suspected glaucoma.
