Uses of Fluticon Nasal Spray

• Manages symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as stuffy, runny, or itchy nose, sneezing, itchy, red, or watery eyes in adults and children above 6 years of age

How does Fluticon Nasal Spray work?

Fluticasone Nasal Spray directly decreases the cells that cause inflammation such as eosinophils, monocytes, mast cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Fluticon Nasal Spray also decreases mucus gland secretions. Therefore, helps in reducing inflammation and making it easier to breathe.

Side Effects of Fluticon Nasal Spray

• Nosebleeds
• Headache
• Shortness of breath
• Irritation or discomfort in the nose, streaks of blood while blowing the nose

Quick Suggestions:

• Don't use it more often or for longer than advised by your doctor.
• Don't apply it to broken or infected areas of skin, face, eyes, or eyelids.
• Don't cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
• If you think the area of skin you are treating has become infected you should stop using Fluticasone Propionate and consult your doctor.
• Consult your doctor if your skin condition has not improved after two weeks of treatment.

Indication of Fluticon Nasal Spray

Fluticasone propionate works by inhibiting certain cells causing redness and swelling (mast cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages) as well as by blocking the release of chemicals causing allergic reactions (histamine). 

Mechanism of Action of Fluticasone Propionate

Following topical administration into the nasal mucosa, Fluticasone propionate exerts anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects. The precise mechanism is not completely understood but may include the following actions:

• Reduction in Mediator Cells:
  • Decreases the number of basophils, leukocytes, and mast cells at the epithelial level.
• Eosinophils:
  • Lowers the number of eosinophils, which are involved in allergic reactions and inflammation.
• Sensitivity of Sensory Nerves:
  • Reduces the sensitivity of sensory nerves to mechanical stimuli.
• Secretory Response:
  • Decreases the secretory response to cholinergic receptor stimulation.
• Fibroblast Activity:
  • Reduces fibroblast activity, which is involved in tissue repair and inflammation.

Inhibition of Capillary Dilation and Permeability:

Dosage & Administration of Fluticon Nasal Spray

Adults & children over 12 years:

• 2 sprays in each nostril once a day, preferably in the morning.
• In some cases, 2 sprays into each nostril twice daily, not exceeding 4 sprays.

Children under 12 years (4-11 years):

• 1 spray in each nostril once a day.
• The maximum total daily dosage should not exceed 4 sprays.
• For perennial rhinitis in children, there is insufficient clinical data to recommend its use.

Children below 4 years:

• The safety and effectiveness of fluticasone propionate nasal spray in children below 4 years of age have not been established.

Patients should use fluticasone propionate nasal spray at regular intervals as directed since its effectiveness depends on its regular use. Or as directed by the physician.

Disease Interactions

Hyperadrenocorticism:

• High doses of Fluticasone propionate can enter the bloodstream and potentially cause complications like menstrual irregularities and acne. Use the lowest effective dose to minimize risk.

Infections:

• Use with caution if you have latent or active infections, as this medication can suppress the immune system and exacerbate infections, especially with prolonged high doses. Dose adjustments or alternatives may be necessary.

Ocular Herpes Infection:

• If you have an eye infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, use Fluticasone propionate cautiously. It can damage the cornea and worsen the condition. Your doctor may adjust the dose or recommend an alternative.

Ocular Toxicities:

• Those with a history of cataracts or glaucoma should use this medication with extreme caution. Prolonged use may increase intraocular pressure, necessitating dose adjustments or alternatives.

Osteoporosis:

• Fluticasone propionate can decrease bone density, which may exacerbate osteoporosis. Bone density should be monitored, and your doctor may adjust the dosage or suggest an alternative treatment.

Diabetes:

Diaper Rash:

Contraindications

Fluticasone propionate nasal spray is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Fluticasone propionate should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
• It is not known whether fluticasone propionate is excreted in human breast milk. Because other corticosteroids are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when fluticasone propionate nasal spray is administered to a nursing woman.

Precautions & Warnings

• Rare instances of wheezing, nasal septum perforation, cataracts, glaucoma, and increased intraocular pressure have been reported following the intranasal application of corticosteroids, including Perinase.
• Although systemic effects have been minimal with recommended doses of Perinase nasal spray, the potential risk increases with larger doses. Therefore, larger than recommended doses of Perinase nasal spray should be avoided.
