Indications
This drug is used to treat pinworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections in the intestine. Pyrantel is an anthelmintic, which means it kills worms. It works by paralyzing the worms so that they can be removed naturally in the stool by the body.
Pyrantel Pamoate is a topical treatment for Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenale/Necator americanus, and Trichostrongylus infections.
Self-treatment for pinworm infections is possible with this drug. Use this medicine only as prescribed by your doctor for other forms of worm infections (such as roundworm and hookworm). This drug should not be given to children under the age of six.
Pharmacology
Pyrantel pamoate works as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking drug, causing the helminths to contract quickly before becoming paralyzed. As a result, the worm "loses its grasp" on the intestinal wall and is transported out of the system through natural means. Pyrantel is little absorbed by the host's intestine, hence the modest dosage of drug administered has no effect on the host. In a severe worm load, spastic (tetanic) paralyzing drugs, particularly pyrantel pamoate, can cause full intestinal obstruction. When a small, extensively parasitized animal is treated and tries to pass a large numbing substance, this obstruction frequently takes the shape of a worm impaction.
Dosage & Administration
Pyrantel Pamoate is given orally at anytime without regard to ingestion of food or beverages. A single dose of 11 mg/kg body weight, to a maximum of 1 gm, should be given to treat infestations caused by the parasites mentioned above. In the case of Pinworm, it is often wise to repeat the dose after an interval of 2 weeks.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to pyrantel or any ingredient in the formulation.
Side Effects
Pyrantel Pamoate is well tolerated in recommended dosage. When given in large dosage, Pyrantel Pamoate may cause gastrointestinal upset such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Other side effects that may occur in rare occasions are headache, dizziness and rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pyrantel Pamoate is typically contraindicated in pregnant women because it has not been investigated in this population. Pyrantel Pamoate should not be given to children under the age of one year.
Precautions & Warnings
Pyrantel Pamoate and Piperazine appear to be antagonistic to each other, hence Pyrantel Pamoate should not be taken with Piperazine. Pyrantel Pamoate should be kept away from children's reach.
Storage Conditions
Protect from light and moisture by storing in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Keep out of children's reach.
