Indications
Fusidic acid is indicated for the topical treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eye and its attachment. These can include bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, pigsty and keratitis. It can also be used to manage abrasions and corneal accidents and conjunctives in the foreign body.
Pharmacology
Fusidic acid is an antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. Fusidic acid disrupts the transfer of amino acids from the aminoacyl tRNA to the protein on the ribosome. Fusidic acid is active against a variety of Gram-positive organisms. The slow-release formula ensures long-term contact with the conjunctival sac. Fusidic acid penetrates aqueous humor very well.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and children (≥ 2 years): Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily for 7 days. Treatment should be continued for at least 48 hours after the eye returns to normal.
Interactions
Synergistic action with antistaphylococcal penicillin. Antagonism with ciprofloxacin.
Contraindications
Fusidic acid viscous eye drops is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this preparation.
Side Effects
Fusidic acid is generally associated with very few adverse effects. The most frequently reported treatment-related side-effect is slight stinging or irritation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy: There is insufficient research on pregnant women and well-controlled controls. Unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, fusidic acid should be used during pregnancy.
Use during breastfeeding: It is not clear whether enough medication is transferred from eye drops to breast milk. Be cautious when using these eye drops to breastfeeding mothers
