Indications
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose is used as a surgical aid (medical device) in procedures involving the anterior chamber of the eye, such as lens extraction and intra-ocular lens implantation. It keeps the anterior chamber at the same depth throughout the surgery, allowing for greater operating precision without risk of harming the cornea's endothelium or other intra-ocular tissues.
Pharmacology
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose is a viscoelastic, non-pyrogenic fluid that fills space and protects tissue. By maintaining a deep chamber in anterior segment procedures, it allows for more effective manipulation with less stress to ocular structures such as the corneal endothelium. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose's viscoelastic characteristics help push the vitreous face back, preventing the formation of a postoperative flat chamber.
Dosage & Administration
Each pre-filled syringe is for single intraocular use only. The quantity injected into the anterior chamber of the eye must be adjusted according to the volume of the aqueous humour and the anatomical structure to be protected.
Contraindications
When used as directed, there are currently no recognized contraindications to using Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose.
Side Effects
After injection into the human eye, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose has been found to be exceptionally well tolerated. In certain situations, a transitory increase in intraocular pressure has been documented after surgery. Viscoelastic agents have been associated with postoperative inflammatory reactions (iritis, hypopyon), as well as ocular edema and corneal decompensation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: There has been no evidence that Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose causes birth abnormalities or other concerns in people.
Lactation: There have been no reports of it causing issues in nursing newborns.
Precautions & Warnings
Precautions are restricted to those that are commonly connected with the ophthalmic surgical operation being done. Because of pre-existing glaucoma or the procedure itself, there may be a transitory increase in intraocular pressure after surgery. As a result, the following measures should be taken into account. At the conclusion of operation, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose should be removed from the anterior chamber. If the intraocular pressure rises above expected levels after surgery, appropriate treatment should be given.
Warning: This product is strictly for intraocular usage.
Only for one-time use
