Urea (25%)

Pharmacology

Topical Urea:

• Properties: Bacteriostatic, bactericidal, fungistatic, proteolytic, hygroscopic, and mild local anesthetic.
• Mechanism of Action:
  • Hygroscopic Property: Causes configurational changes in proteins in the stratum corneum.
  • Softening Effect: Dissolves the intracellular matrix, loosening the horny layer of skin, shedding scaly skin, and softening hyperkeratotic areas.
• Therapeutic Effects: Depend on local concentrations rather than systemic absorption.
• Excretion: If absorbed, urea is excreted unchanged in the urine.

Side Effects

Generally safe, but on rare occasions, it may cause burning and irritation if applied to inflamed, broken, or exudative skin eruptions.
