Tocogel 400 is a natural Vitamin E (tocopherol) formulation. Although the precise biological role of Vitamin E is not entirely defined, its primary action in the human body is as an antioxidant.
Vitamin E protects polyunsaturated fatty acids—key components of cell membranes—and other oxygen-sensitive vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C from oxidative damage. It neutralizes free radicals without forming additional radicals, thereby preventing oxidative injury to cell membranes.
Vitamin E deficiency in premature infants may lead to irritability, edema, thrombosis, and hemolytic anemia. In children and adults, low serum tocopherol levels have been associated with muscle weakness, reduced red blood cell lifespan, increased susceptibility to hemolysis, creatinuria, and lipid pigment deposition.
Oral supplementation corrects Vitamin E deficiency. Approximately 20–80% of Vitamin E is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and adequate absorption requires bile and dietary fat. The vitamin is metabolized in the liver and excreted mainly through bile, with minimal urinary elimination.
Vitamin E may reduce the absorption of Vitamins A and K
It can also interfere with Vitamin K–K-dependent coagulation pathways
Contraindicated in patients with bleeding disorders or those receiving anticoagulant therapy
Hypersensitivity to Vitamin E or any component of the formulation
Vitamin E is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used at recommended doses. The safety of high-dose supplementation has not been established.
