Anjort is a specialized preparation containing a standardized extract of St. John’s Wort, widely recognized for its efficacy in treating depression. The key active constituents of St. John’s Wort include hypericin, hyperforin, hyperoside, and quercitrin, and it is rich in vitamin C. Jonort exhibits antidepressant activity by inhibiting the reuptake of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and L-glutamate. It also has inhibiting activity on Monoamine oxidase (MAO) and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT).
St. John’s Wort is commonly used to treat mild to moderate depression and associated conditions such as anxiety, fatigue, loss of appetite, and insomnia. The main components, Hypericin and Hyperforin, are responsible for its antidepressant effects. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, it is believed to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline, inhibit Monoamine Oxidase (MAO), up-regulate serotonin receptors, and reduce depression.
The recommended dose for St. John’s Wort capsule in adults is 1 capsule three times daily or as prescribed by the physician.
St. John’s Wort is generally safe, but it may occasionally cause side effects such as dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea.
Overdose symptoms may include dry mouth, dizziness, and diarrhea.
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks to the infant. Breastfeeding while using this drug is also not recommended.
Caution should be exercised when using St. John’s Wort with drugs metabolized by Cytochrome P450 and drugs that lower the seizure threshold.
Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
