Echinacea products comprise various bioactive components, including echinacoside, caffeic acids, alkyl amides, polysaccharides, and glycoproteins. While some products are standardized to echinacoside content, the exact active component responsible for its medicinal properties lacks consensus. In vitro studies have shown that echinacea activates macrophages, leading to the release of tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1, interleukin 6, and interferon. It exhibits antiviral activity against influenza, herpes, and poliovirus. Phenolic compounds present in echinacea showcase antioxidant activity. Additionally, echinacea has anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, and it stimulates the anterior pituitary-adrenal cortex.
